The Shelf Life of a Teacher

Best Until...

The classroom is an everchanging domain to which the practice of teaching and learning is most acquainted. Within this space, a TEACHER may educate several generations of learners; which points to the fact, that the turnover time of a teacher is far slower than a learner. This makes it difficult on us as educators to cater for the various cohorts of students that have passed though our classrooms or who will pass through our classrooms. In this context a teacher is deemed expired when he or she fails to adequately relate and or positively impact the current generation of learners.

The point is colleagues, as teachers, we must deliberate in upgrading ourselves to appeal to the intellectual appetite of the newest or latest generation of learners. This speaks to our agility and professional awareness in responding to generation gap.

To increase our “shelf life”, it is very important not to view the differences in behaviors of the current generation of learners as a challenge but, rather an opportunity to engage them with what they enjoy doing. This may take the form of free classrooms, integration of drifted popular cultures and the intuition of developing tweaked approaches.
